Series of Furniture made of vulkanicfiber

Diplom_2024-74-Edit.jpg

Do we still need wood, metal, and plastic, or is paper enough for us?

„Form Follows Function“

this was the guiding principle in my diploma thesis. The series of objects, consisting of a shelf, a bench, and a lamp, is made of vulcanized fiber.

Vulcanized fiber is the world‘s oldest truly sustainable plastic, as it is

entirely made from cotton cellulose, also known as paper.

The aim of this work was to revive the material, which originated around 1855, from obscurity and integrate it into a new application field: furniture design, as a full-surface material.

This effort resulted in a series of three objects:

Shelf, bench and an lamp—where the design principles were consistently applied across all pieces.

The material thickness of the objects ranges

between 3.2 and 4 mm.

4 mm vulcanized fiber weighs 1.26 kg/m2.

In comparison, 4 mm birch veneer weighs 2.72 kg/m2.
